Aging Gracefully Means Embracing Change and Asking Hard Questions
As we grow older, one of the most important things we can do is reflect on who we are becoming. Aging gracefully isn't just about external changes; it’s about our internal transformation and willingness to ask ourselves hard questions.
The Apostle Paul offers us timeless wisdom in Philippians 3:13-14:
“…one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
This powerful reminder encourages us to look forward, not backward, and to press on toward God’s purpose for our lives. So, who are you becoming as you age? What kind of person are you today? Are you content with your growth, or is it time to make intentional changes to ensure you are aging with grace?
Key Questions to Reflect On for Aging Gracefully
Aging gracefully means being aware of the impact you have on those around you. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
Are you delightful to be around?
Are you actively serving others?
Are you using your gifts and talents to love others well?
Are you curious and genuinely interested in others’ lives?
Are you working on your weaknesses?
Do you love the gift of life?
Are you thankful and grace-filled?
Are you reflecting the beauty of Jesus?
Each of these questions challenges us to take stock of our relationships and how we live out our faith as we age.
Aging Gracefully Means Letting Go to Embrace God’s Plan
One of the hardest aspects of aging gracefully is letting go of the life we planned in order to embrace the life God has for us. Letting go requires us to surrender control, which is never easy.
Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to trust in the Lord:
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.”
This verse reminds us that we are not in control—God is. Life is full of disappointments, failures, loneliness, illness, and loss. But through it all, our later years are a gift, not a burden.
Jesus invites us into a life of rest:
"Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy,
and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
Aging Gracefully Means Trusting God Through Life’s Transitions
As we age, many of us struggle with transitions in life. We may wonder:
"What am I when I’m no longer who I used to be?"
"Who am I when my job ends or my roles change?"
These questions can stir up pain and confusion, but they also provide an opportunity for us to realign our lives with God’s purpose. Life is about being—being caring, loving, and available to what truly matters. Remember, we are human beings, not human "doings."
Aging Gracefully Means Reflecting God’s Character
Ask yourself:
Do I have blind spots that hinder my witness to the gospel?
Am I reflecting the beauty of Jesus in my life?
Is the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—evident in me?
If you’re unsure where to start, studying the character of God is a great way to grow. A wonderful resource is None Like Him by Jen Wilkin, which helps us understand who God is and how we can reflect His character.
